Making Tax Digital: The UK VAT Deadlines Your Finance Calendar Must Hold

MTD has made UK VAT a quarterly systems discipline — digital records, digital links and returns due one month and seven days after each quarter. Here is the calendar discipline that keeps penalties away.

Making Tax Digital for VAT is no longer new, but its discipline still catches businesses out. The rule of thumb every finance team should internalise: your VAT return and payment are due one calendar month and seven days after the end of each VAT quarter. A March quarter-end means a 7 May deadline — and HMRC's points-based late-submission penalty regime means every miss is recorded, not just fined.

What MTD actually demands is process, not software purchases. Records must be kept digitally, the journey from invoice to return must travel through 'digital links' — no manual re-keying between systems — and the return itself must be filed through MTD-compatible software such as Xero, QuickBooks UK, Sage or a bridging tool. A spreadsheet is still permitted, but only when digitally linked into the filing chain.

The calendar is also expanding. MTD for Income Tax Self Assessment began applying from April 2026 to sole traders and landlords with qualifying income above £50,000, with the £30,000 threshold following from April 2027. Businesses serving UK clients should expect quarterly digital updates to become the norm across direct tax as well, not just VAT.

For UK accounting practices and SMEs working with an offshore desk, the practical answer is a shared compliance calendar: quarters mapped at the start of the year, bookkeeping closed weekly rather than quarterly, and a named reviewer signing off each return before submission. That is precisely how our UK desk runs MTD — so the deadline arrives to a return that is already ready.
